About The Winery - The Winery

Located in one of the oldest buildings in the town (on the site of the historic 13th century Burton Abbey), this iconic and award-winning restaurant is set in stunning grounds overlooking the river Trent.

A gorgeous riverside location, The Winery is a stunning bar and restaurant steeped in history which has been carefully renovated to the highest standard whilst embracing every aspect of its past. The Winery is set within the Abbey and was first established in 650AD for religious uses. Since then it has had a colourful past as a religious college and home to ‘The Master of the Infirmary’.

From 1910 the building was taken over by the Burton Club who transformed it into a public house ‘The Abbey Inn’, eventually developing into the wonderful bar and restaurant it is today.

Leigh and Cathy are no strangers to The Winery, having worked there during its most successful period several years ago when Leigh was Head Chef and Cathy ran the front of house. More recently they worked in similar roles at Burton Albion Football Club, but it was always on their radar to run their own restaurant and jumped at the chance to purchase The Winery when the opportunity arose.

“Cathy and I ran a successful fish and seafood restaurant in Cheshire before moving to The Winery about 10 years ago. We Love this town and area, and it was always an ambition of ours to run our own restaurant and create a menu based around fish, seafood and quality meats.“

“The addition of an Oyster Bar gives us a unique selling point and we believe a great opportunity to bring quality produce to our existing and new customers. The new menu is already in place and receiving rave reviews from customers. Feedback so far has been excellent, and we are very excited about the future.”

Our furniture is cosy, contemporary and subtle in design as not to overwhelm the charming character of our beautiful building. Beautiful tiled floors, a large candlelit chandelier and striking carved wooden doors are just a few of the features on show at The Winery. With our own attractive terrace set within the rolling gardens and grounds of the Abbey. A real treat!
